Spring 2010 Short Story Prompt

I have a hard time writing short stories, because my ideas tend to snowball and turn into entire novels. In an attempt to get more practice in the art of short story writing, I’m starting a challenge for the group where we all write stories based on the same prompt. This is the first time we’ve done this, and I’m excited to see the many different directions our writers will go with the same kernel of inspiration! If this first attempt is successful, I’ll try to institute this as a quarterly or semi-annual challenge.

The prompt: “Listen closely to the whispering.”
(Thanks to Adam Maxwell’s Writing Prompts Generator for the inspiration!)

Instructions:

Write a short story (1,000-7,500 words) that uses the prompt phrase somewhere in the text (it doesn’t have to be the first line). The phrase can be used as a clause in a larger sentence, but words should not be added/subtracted to the prompt itself.

Stories are due March 25, and we’ll talk about them at the March 28th meeting.
