This is sound advice Rachel, any time a writer can "experience" some of these types of events it will open their eyes to much more than can be gleaned from the internet. I'm not sure I understand the point of the zombie exercise but I'm sure it would be entertaining. Is that training planned through CDC or some local organization? In any event, writers should really try to participate in some of these disaster exercises.

I really think this is just fear mongering. Bestselling big six authors publishing with indie press, and/or self publishing is nothing new. They've been doing this for 30 + years or more.

Just wanted to say that this is a great post. It's a different perspective and one that I hadn't seen before (mind you, could be because I'm still working on writing a book that would be good enough to query or self publish). I will agree that authors tend to give themselves the short end of the stick sometimes. They forget that they are the main characters of their own lives... and if your hero wouldn't bow down to a king but only nod respectfully then they should think about doing the same. They have done something truly impressive by writing something that deserves to be read. They have created a world in words. What could be more worthy of praise and respect?!

Amazon's ebook sales include through publishers as well as through self publishers.

There are many books, in print, not available via Kindle or other ebook format.

And you're the only person I know that buys random things under $3 just because it's under $3. I have to budget for all buys including those at .99

Well, Jeff. I may hate reading things on my husband's Nook, but I'll get him to buy "Do Over" anyway and give it a read-through and a review on both sites for you.

Ebooks on LuLu too. Marrying yourself to one format isn't the best idea for any publisher. ;)

I was going to use CreateSpace for the novels since I'm already married to Amazon for the ebooks, but does that really make sense for a 16,000 word novella?
